On April 26th Tara Camogie Club London hosted their eight annual camogie 7s tournament in Greenford, London. The first tournament took place in 2006 and the tournament has been going strong ever since. It was a great way to kick off the Camogie season following on from the Birmingham tournament back in March. Tara are delighted to host this tournament every year and it is great that teams travel from Ireland, Birmingham and London to partake.
Holycross Ballycahill of Tipperary attended for the sixth time whilst Castletara of Cavan entered two teams, with a total of 45 people travelling over for a long weekend away. All London and Birmingham teams entered the Junior and Senior competitions
With an early start Saturday morning it was all hands on decks as teams turned up bright and early for registration. It was lovely to see the sun come out as excitement was brewing for a great day of games ahead. The standard was very high in both the junior and senior competitions.
The Senior Cup Final was an all-London affair with Getjar cup holders and hosts Tara playing Fr Murphys. Whilst it was a much tighter game in the earlier rounds, Tara won 7-4 to 1-6. Captain Caroline Kelly accepted the cup from sponsor Sean Masterson, who has sponsored this category since 2006. Taras Angela Kenneally won Senior Player of the Tournament, also sponsored by Getjar and voted on by the referees. Croydon beat Castletara to win the Senior Plate final which was sponsored by Cara Personnnel. Elaine Dunphy excelled in that game.
Tara Junior team beat local rivals Pearses in the Junior Cup final, with both teams having won out their preliminary groups. Sinead Kehoe of Tommy Flynns Alperton was on hand to present Tara captain Joni Traynor the Junior cup; whilst Taras Emer Kelly picked up the Junior Player of the Tournament award. Green Isles beat John Mitchells of Birmingham in the Junior Plate competition and the Plate was presented to captain Suzanne White by Maurice Carr of Tir Chonaill Park.
Tara Camogie Club would like to thank all that helped prepare for the 7s and all that helped on the day. To Maurice Carr, Michael Mullins and Sean Campbell of TGC for preparing the pitches and goals; to all the referees including Beano Collins, Tom Tighe, David Dowd, Alan Smyth, Rita O Mahoney, Elaine Dunphy, Noelle Devlin, Denise Gilligan, Helen Murphy, Geraldine Mulvanny and Denis Neenan. This will be the clubs eighth tournament having their first in 2006 on their 20th Anniversary. Holycross Ballycahill of Tipperary attended that first tournament and are back again for the sixth time.
