League Final - Tara Juniors take the Double again in 09
Venue: TCG, Greenford
Date: Sunday 8th November 2009
Result: Tara 3-2 Croydon 0-1
The Junior camogie season came to a gripping close yesterday in Greenford where the League final was played out between Tara and Croydon. İt was a thrilling encounter from the first to final whistle as both sides had their sights set on victory. The supporters on both sides added to the ocassion and helped drive on the players, who in turn cannot have left disappointed as these teams certainly delivered.
The first half in particular was a real pressure cooker of play with neither side giving an inch. İt was as intense as it was exciting. What a difference a few short months makes in that the last time Croydon stepped out to face Tara. Play was tight for the majority of the first 30 minutes as both sides were locked in defensive play.
Tara's forwards Jess Greene and Sheila Fernandes were buzzing around the Croydon goal but were unable to break Croydon. Tara were did not make use of the many chances and the wides were clocking up.It looked as though it was going to be level pegging at half time until Jess Greene finally found the net close to the half time whistle. This surely must have given a few grey hairs to Tara's manager, Paul Walsh.
The score at the half time whistle – 1 goal to Tara. Croydon had yet to score.
Tara came into their stride in the second half as play was a little looser, which Tara took advantage of in finding more space on the pitch. Tara's midfield combination of Grace Hamilton, Colette Fahy and Rosie Sutcliffe worked hard to bring the sliotar to the forward line. Colette Fahy and Grace Hamilton also scored a point apiece from play.
Great individual effort also from Rosie Sutcliffe who is soon to return home to her native New Zealand along with team mate Deborah Laurence. Cat Dwyer's recent injury did not deter her from finding the net when she came on in the 2nd half. Dwyer made a big difference in the second half, leading by example up front, the expereince of last years finals standing her in good sted. Tara widened the gulf even more as Greene went on to score her second goal. Commiserations to Croydon but the future of Junior camogie in London is bright based on yesterday's display.
