Championship - Tara take another victory

Venue: TCG, Greenford
Date: 18 May 2009
Result: Tara 2-4 v 1-2 Bros Pearse

The second round of the Junior Camogie Championship on Saturday 16th May saw Tara pitted against Brother Pearses; and the stakes were high, each game now bringing the teams ever closer to the coveted season finale. The stage was set at Tir Chonail Gaels grounds with throw-in at 11.00am. Conditions were dry but a fierce wind made play very difficult indeed, with each player having to battle very hard for each and every score.

From the outset the game was tense and competitive.  Rosie Sutcliffe put Taras on the scoreboard with a goal after making plenty of a pass from Sarah Gaughan. Tara goalkeeper, Jacqui Thornton put paid to Jennifer O'Donovan's designs on a goal, but this was quickly followed by a point from a free from the 45 by Pearce's Ann Cumiskey. Tara's Sutcliffe converted another opportunity into a point and Mary Cahill of Pearces pulled on a loose ball and scored a goal for her team. The half-time score was 1-1 to 1-2 in Pearce's favour.

The second half was equally as exciting as the first as each team vied for dominance. Tara's Nollaig Barron demonstrated great strength and resolve in the Tara back line and was ably supported by Nicola Robinson and Susanna Gill. Tara piled on the pressure in the second half with the wind in their backs and the forward line had many scoring opportunities that were quickly closed down by Pearce's defence.  Tara's captain Grace Hamilton scored two points and Cat Dwyer scored another, thus adding to their tally. Janine Heagney came on for Kate Barett in the second half and saw plenty of action in the forward line.

Tara's Karen Curtin-Landy and Christina Nash battled hard in front of the Pearce's goal in the closing stages and were finally rewarded when Nash passed to Landy in front of the goal which was buried in the Pearce's net by Landy. Victory to Tara with a final score of 2-4 to 1-2.
